Location

Located just a 5-minute taxi ride from Ipoh city centre, Ipoh Travelodge is in good location for those that want easy access to the centre and the many nearby sites. It isn’t really within walking distance of town. Therefore, you’ll need to hire a car or use Grab taxis to get around. However, there are plenty of nearby cafes and restaurants within walking distance, and the main road the hotel is located is within a 15-minute drive of key points of interest.

We used Grab taxis to get around during our time in Ipoh and found them affordable, fast and very convenient. Ipoh Travelodge’s location might not suit those that want to be in the heart of all the Ipoh action. However, being just outside of town means less traffic, better value for money and facilities such as a swimming pool. If you’re OK with using taxis to get around, Ipoh Travelodge is in an excellent location.

Lobby area/ check in

When you arrive at the Travelodge, Ipoh, you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome by the hotel staff. You can either make your way to reception using the steps or use the ramp at the side of the hotel if you have a buggy or wheelchair. One of our favourite features of the hotel is its grand, open-space lobby area. Featuring marble tiling, high ceilings and accents of traditional Malaysian décor, it feels welcoming and laid-back. We checked in at the front desk and the staff were very professional and knowledgeable about the hotel. The check in process took around 5 minutes.

Top tip: there are sofas and various seating around the lobby, so you can relax and unwind at any time of the day.

Rooms

At the Travelodge, there are 9 different types of rooms to choose from, depending on your party size and what you’re looking for. The hotel is one of the larger hotels in Ipoh, with 268 guest rooms in total. The room types include:

  • Superior Queen
  • Superior Twin
  • Deluxe Queen
  • Deluxe Twin
  • Deluxe Premier Queen
  • Deluxe Premier Twin
  • Friends & Family Quadruple
  • Friends & Family Quadruple Suite
  • Accessible Room

You can find out more about each of the rooms on the official hotel website.

We stayed in the Ipoh Travelodge’s standard room option, and it was perfect. Rooms are large compared to similarly priced hotels, and décor is bright and themed towards the city. Being a fairly new hotel, it’s modern, fresh and full of modern amenities.

Top tips for booking a room

  • Compare room prices from various third-party booking sites. We usually book our rooms on booking.com, but also use TripAdvisor to shop around and find the best prices. Book your stay at the Travelodge, Ipoh on Booking.com.
  • Request a room on the upper floor if you want the best views of the city.
  • If you aren’t keen on heights, we suggest opting for a room on one of the lower floors. Travelodge isn’t like your typical sky-rise hotel with over 40 floors, but the elevator is glass, and you can see the height of the hotel clearly as you ascend.
  • The best rooms are those located at the back of the hotel, away from the main road. Tell the reception team your preferences when you check in and see what they can do for you.
  • Book a room rate with breakfast included. It isn’t available as standard with some room options. The breakfast at the Ipoh Travelodge is excellent for the price!
  • Book a room rate that’s cancellable for free ahead of arrival. That way, if the price drops between now and when you check in, you can cancel for free and re-book the lower rate. This is something we recommend doing for all hotels if you can.

Facilities

Despite the Travelodge Ipoh being a budget-friendly hotel, we were really impressed with the hotel’s facilities. You can easily stay here for a week and have everything you need. Rooms, common areas and amenities are well equipped.

Swimming pool

One aspect of the Travelodge we loved was its outdoor swimming pool. Located just in front of the hotel’s main entrance, there’s a small pool for children to enjoy, and a slightly larger swimming pool for older children and adults. There are also chairs, sun loungers and parasols that you can use, along with a shower and a toilet. Whilst the swimming pools are fairly small, we found them to be very quiet during our visit. We practically had the pool to ourselves. It’s the perfect place to chill out after a morning sightseeing.

Top tip: collect towels from reception and drop them off in the basket located around the pool area when you’re finished with them.

Fitness centre

Located on the 1st floor, opposite the restaurant area, the Travelodge boasts a modest, yet fully equipped fitness centre. Featuring treadmills, bikes, cross trainers, a small free weights section and a handful machines, it’s a great place burn off some extra calories. The gym is  airconditioned and has a water station.

Bars & restaurants

There’s one dining area at the Travelodge, which is located on the 1st floor. It’s a large, open-air restaurant, offering seating both inside the restaurant, but also in the large atrium area. There’s also another seating area tucked away next to the buffet table, if you want convenient access to the food. The restaurant is incredibly spacious with lots of tables, so you’ll never end up waiting to be seated.

The breakfast here is fantastic, with continental options such as bread, cereal, chicken sausages, eggs, fruit, salad, as well as traditional Malay food such as Nasi Lemak. It’s busiest at breakfast, but you can also have lunch or dinner here if you wish. They offer various curry and noodle dishes, all at an affordable price. Request a menu and have a browse through the list of extensive options.

Breakfast is served buffet style with an egg station. Lunch and dinner are a la carte, made to order.

Other amenities

Laundry service

If you’re a travelling with family or are planning on staying at the Travelodge for some time, the hotel has a self-service laundry room you can use. It features multiple washing machines and a dryer. You’ll need to pay at reception, where they’ll give you a token to slot into the machines. It’s a great added touch to the hotel and comes in very handy. It’s a lot more affordable than the typical hotel ‘pay per item’ laundry service.

Kommons coffee shop

If you need a quick pick-me-up before sightseeing around Ipoh, we suggest stopping by Kommons Coffee Shop. Located within the hotel lobby area, Kommons is a modern, trendy café with a bright white design. It sells a variety of specialist coffee blends, plus drinks such as matcha tea, juices and fruit teas. Choose from hot or cold coffee blends, and be sure try one of their delicious desserts. We personally had a drink and snack from Kommons at least 3 times during our stay and highly recommend. Their coffee is delicious!

Parking

If you’re arriving by car,  you can take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary parking. You’ll need to bring the parking ticket to reception, so they can activate free parking for you when you check out. Parking is located just outside the main entrance, next to the swimming pool.

Kids Club

If you have children, you can make use of the kid’s club, which is located next door to the fitness centre on the 1st floor. It has a variety of fun activities for kids of all ages. We didn’t use this service during our visit but saw many families that did. Contact reception to find out more information.

Festivals and special events

Urbax Fitness Thompson Gym

Urbax Fitness Thompson Gym is a third party gym that’s located inside the Travelodge Ipoh. Operated by different owners to the Travelodge, it’s popular amongst locals and has much more equipment than the hotel’s complimentary gym. Hotel guests can train here, but you’ll need to download the URBAX app and sign up for a paid day pass. Speak to the reception team at Travelodge Ipoh hotel for more information.

Our top tips for visiting the Ipoh Travelodge Hotel

  • Make the most out of the breakfast at the Travelodge. There are so many options, catering for a variety of dietary needs. It’s a great way to start the day and is very affordable.
  • If you’re not travelling by car, we recommend using Grab taxis to get to and from the hotel. Simply download the app and create an account.
  • Request an upper floor room for the best views of Ipoh.
  • If you want to rest at the swimming pool during your stay, be sure to arrive in the morning or early afternoon. The swimming pool area is busiest mid-afternoon.
  • Compare prices for your chosen dates using Trivago or TripAdvisor hotel booking websites. Prices can vary widely between booking sites and dates. Other websites worth checking out are Agoda and Booking.com. Booking.com offer a ‘Genius’ discount if you sign up to their rewards scheme.
  • Ipoh City Centre and its many restaurants are only a short drive away from Ipoh Travelodge Hotel. However, if you want somewhere within walking distance, be sure to check out Lalaland Café, Mama Kim Wellness Kitchen Greentown and 7 Warna Kopitiam. The hotel is located in Ipoh’s beautiful ‘Greentown’ neighbourhood, where you’ll find plenty of excellent restaurants, cafes and convenience stores.

Our overall thoughts on the Travelodge, Ipoh

We absolutely loved our stay at the Travelodge, Ipoh and it exceeded all of our expectations. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to be in a great location that’s near the Ipoh City Centre and the area’s many attractions. You’ll need to use taxis to get around. However, that’s a small price to pay for the excellent value of the hotel and its facilities. The hotel is modern, well equipped and welcoming.

Positives:

  • The hotel is centrally located just outside of town. It’s quick and easy to get to key attractions and Ipoh city centre in a taxi.
  • The Travelodge is an affordably priced hotel. You won’t find better value for money!
  • Rooms are spacious, modern and well maintained.
  • The coffee shop in the lobby area is fantastic – you must try their iced coffee and one of their ‘Croffles!’

Areas for improvement:

  • The hotel is a 37-minute walk from Ipoh old town centre. Therefore, you’ll often need to use public transport or taxis to get around.
  • The hot plates in the breakfast buffet area could do with an upgrade. On occasion, we found some hot food to be cold.
  • Ipoh Travelodge Hotel lacks the luxuries of hotels such as Ipoh Bali Hotel, The Haven All Suite Resort and Banjaran Hot Springs Retreat. If you prefer a luxury 4 or 5-star hotel, there are better options.

Our overall score: 5/5
