How to get to Mount Tibidabo

There are a few ways to get to Mount Tibidabo. The best option will depend on where you’re staying in the city and whether you want to use public transport.

Public transport and the Tibidabo Funicular

The first, and in our opinion, the best way to get to Mount Tibidabo is by funicular transport, which is essentially a tram that scales the side of the mountain. The funicular costs 10 euros per person for a return journey, departing frequently from Mount Tibidabo’s base. It takes just a few minutes to reach the top and is fun and scenic way to reach the summit.

To get to the funicular station, you’ll first need to get the metro to Av. Tibidabo station. You can then choose to walk 17-minutes to the funicular, or board the local T2B TibiBus for a quick ascent to the funicular station. Find out more about public transport routes on the Tibidabo official website here.

Google Maps is also a great way to find directions to Tibidabo from wherever you are in the city. View Google Maps directions here.

Car / Taxi

Driving up to Mount Tibidabo is an option if you already have a car with you or want an easy route from your hotel. However, the winding roads up the hill means that it can be slower than the funicular option. If you want to travel by car, we recommend using a taxi. It takes around 25-minutes to drive to the summit from the base of the hill.

Alternatively, take a taxi to the funicular station at the base of Mount Tibidabo and then use the funicular to reach the top in a matter of minutes.

For all you adventurers and avid hikers out there, you may consider walking up to the top of Mount Tibidabo. There are several mountain trails that are popular year-round! The shortest route to the summit takes only 1-hour, but it’s a steep, tough climb. There are also a number of longer, more scenic trails. Walk both ways or take transport one way and walk the other – the choice is yours.

The top things to do on Mount Tibidabo, Barcelona

Once you reach the summit of mountain, you’ll be spoilt for attractions. Here are the top things to do on Mount Tibidabo:

Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

If you look up at the mountain from Barcelona’s city centre, you’ll see a small white church at the summit. This beautiful white church was built at the top of Tibidabo in the late-19th-century and has watched over the city ever since. The hill-top location and fairy-tale-like design makes it a great site to see when exploring the mountain.

Admire the outside of the church, peer inside to see the grand design and basilica, or look out from one of the church viewpoints. It’s at the highest point on the mountain.

Tibidabo viewpoints

There aren’t many places in Barcelona where you can get such amazing views of the city. The entire Mount Tibidabo area has a series of balconies, park benches and viewing platforms. Here, you can see all corners of the city, plus the mountains to the south-west. See if you can spot famous attractions such as the Sagrada Familia and Montjuic cable car from afar! We personally loved seeing the unique rectangular layout of the buildings in Barcelona’s L’Eixample district.

Amusement Park

The Tibidabo Amusement Park has long been a favourite pastime for locals, especially those with children. With an opening date back in 1905, this hill-top theme park has a good collection of funfair rides, including a horse carousel, bumper cars, trains, and a giant Ferris wheel. There are also attractions that take advantage of Tibidabo’s sky-high location. In total, there are over 30 attractions in the theme park. Many of these are for kids, but there are a few adults might enjoy too.

Rather than one fee to enter the amusement park, anyone is free to roam around. Rides are paid for individually using tokens. The amusement park is one of the best things to do in Mount Tibidabo for families.

Another point of interest that’s immediately visible on Barcelona’s horizon is Collserola Tower. Mount Tibidabo is part of a wider mountainous area known as Collserola Natural Park. At almost 17-kilometres long, it’s the largest green space in the Barcelona area. It features lush, green Mediterranean forest, several chapels and churches and some medieval castles. Its biggest allure is its many hiking and walking trails. Collserola Natural Park is one of the best places to go in Barcelona if you like hiking. Whilst not directly accessible from Mount Tibidabo, the park’s trails are very close by. If you’d like to check it out, we recommend seeing the mountainside in the morning and touring Collserola Natural Park in the afternoon.

Where to eat and drink

At the top of Mount Tibidabo, you won’t find any bars or restaurants worth shouting about. However, the amusement park has several food stalls and small restaurants where you can enjoy a full meal or grab a snack. Ice cream stalls, churro stands, Spanish sandwiches, pizza and hot dogs are all on offer. The amusement park food is typically what you’d expect at a theme park and can be hit or miss. However, we found the snack food and sweets to be very good.

We recommend packing a small picnic for your time in Mount Tibidabo or eating back in the city when you return from the mountain. Be sure to bring a water bottle with you too. There are various water refill stations you can use.

Note: food kiosk opening times vary and some may be closed on days the amusement park is closed. Visit the Tibidabo amusement park website for more information.
