Tanjung Rhu Beach is surrounded by wildlife; its beach is untouched, and an array of large limestone cliffs and islands sit just off the shore. The scenery here is breath-taking!

Visit Tanjung Rhu Beach for a day of relaxation and to experience the mangroves of Kilim Park Geoforest. It’s much more than a beach and our blog post will explain exactly why. Read our complete guide Tanjung Rhu Beach for information on how to get here, the top things to see, where to eat, and answers to many more frequently asked questions.

What is Tanjung Rhu Beach, Langkawi?

Tanjung Rhu Beach is a free-to-visit, white-sand beach, on Langkawi’s remote north-east coast. Located right next to the UNESCO World Heritage Kilim Geoforest Park, it’s a place that feels less developed than other beaches on the island. The unique coastal scenery and limestone cliffs just off the shore set the scene for one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen.

As the location of Tanjung Beach is so remote, it’s incredibly quiet here and it gets very few crowds. It’s a little more difficult to get to compared to other beaches in Langkawi, but the trip is well worth it.

Location

Tanjung Rhu Beach is on Langkawi’s north-east coast, directly facing the Andaman Sea and Thailand. In fact, it’s so close to Thailand, you can see the island of Ko Tarutao in the distance from the shores of the beach. Its secluded location is around a 30-minute drive from the airport, and a 40-minute drive from the popular resort town of Pantai Cenang.

Is it worth visiting Tanjung Rhu Beach?

Most definitely, yes! Tanjung Rhu is widely regarded as the best beach in Langkawi. Here are our top 3 reasons to visit:

How to get there

Here are best ways to get to Tanjung Rhu Beach from other towns and resorts in Langkawi.

  1. Book a Grab taxi using the Grab mobile app. It’s the most popular taxi app in Malaysia and is extremely affordable. Download the app, create an account and book a taxi straight to Tanjung Rhu. It’ll take you around 40-minutes to reach the beach from the resort towns on the south of the island.
  2. Rent a car or scooter. Having your own mode of transport makes exploring Langkawi easy. The roads are well maintained in most areas, and there aren’t a lot of cars on the road. There’s plenty of parking in the area and you can leave whenever you’d like.
  3. Book a tour. There are various tours on websites such as Get Your Guide that offer a day of sightseeing at Kilim Geoforest Park and Tanjung Rhu Beach. You’ll get picked up and dropped off at your hotel, making it a convenient way to see the sites of the north-east.
  4. Book a stay in one of the Tanjung Rhu hotels and use the hotel’s transfer service.

Top tip: If you’re getting a Grab taxi to Tanjung Rhu Beach, be sure to book a return taxi to your resort in the afternoon. It can be difficult to find a grab on an evening due to Tanjung Rhu’s remote location.

The top things to do in Tanjung Rhu

Tanjung Rhu is much more than a beach! There’s plenty to see and do here. The top things to do at Tanjung Rhu beach include:

Relax on THE beach

It goes without saying that the top activity here is simply relaxing on the beautiful white-sand beach. Take some photos, go for a long walk along the shoreline or bring a towel and lie on the sand. There are some loungers to hire. However, there aren’t many and the beach is quite undeveloped. Therefore, we recommend you bring your own towels.

Kayak to the nearby islands

When you arrive at Tanjung Rhu Beach, you’ll instantly notice the small islands and towering limestone cliffs around 100 – 150m from the beach. The best way to explore these islands is by kayak. Hire a kayak from one of the beach vendors and have fun paddling between the islands. You can even get off to explore some of the island beaches, and they’re so secluded, you’ll have them all to yourself! It costs around 50 RM to hire a kayak for a couple of hours.

Walk along the sand bar

If you’re lucky, the tide will be out during your visit to Tanjung Rhu, and you’ll be able to walk along a long sand bar to the nearby island. The sand bar is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Tanjung Rhu Beach and it’s worth trying to time your visit for low tide. It’s a very cool experience walking a full 150 metres out to sea in shallow water!

Water sports

Langkawi’s south coast is the top spot for water sports on the island. However, you’ll find one or two water sports providers in Tanjung Rhu. Go on a boat tour around the nearby beaches and islands, hire a paddleboard or try something more exhilarating.

Enjoy a drink in a beach bar

One of the top things to do in Tanjung Rhu is to simply kick back, admire the view and enjoy a cold drink. As the beach is undeveloped, there aren’t many bars or restaurants. You’ll find one restaurant, a coffee shop and a couple of drink stalls. However, that’s all you need! We recommend checking out Restoran Seafood Anis Tanjung Rhu for their excellent iced coffees and coconuts. Coffee Classic Langkawi is good for fruit shakes, soft drinks and food.

Meet the local wildlife

During our visit to Tanjung Rhu Beach, we saw giant monitor lizards, monkeys, tropical birds, eagles and various species of lizards. The backdrop of the beach is rich in jungle terrain and it’s right next to a series of mangroves, so you can wander away from the beach and explore the Tanjung Rhu forest areas at your leisure.

Visit Kilim Geoforest Park

One of the best things to do in Tanjung Rhu is a boat tour around the mangroves of Kilim Geoforest Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and protected area, the mangroves are full of wildlife, caves and beautiful jungle scenery. Boat tours depart from Tanjung Rhu pier every morning, taking you on a 2-hour journey through the mangroves and then out to sea. During our visit, we saw monkeys, mudskippers, blue crabs, eagles and hornbills. This attraction will be a highlight of your trip!

One of the most adventurous things to do on Tanjung Rhu Beach is an ATV ride. There are various forest trails just behind the beach area, and a great way to explore them is by quad bike. Hire an ATV for an hour or so and join a guide for a tour of Tanjung Rhu’s nature. There’s an ATV rental company right by the entrance to the beach.

Stop by the nearby night market

If you’re staying in Tanjung Rhu overnight on a Friday, stop by Ayer Hangat Night Market. Located in the town just across from Tanjung Rhu, it’s a great place to sample some delicious local street food. It also has a variety of clothing, accessories, gifts and apparel stalls. Note: the night market only takes place on Friday evenings. It’s tough to get a Grab on an evening in Tanjung Rhu so you’ll need to arrange a hotel transfer or use a rental car/moped to get there. It’s well worth checking out!

Stay at a luxury hotel

If you want a beach experience like no other, consider staying at one of the two Tanjung Rhu hotels; Tanjung Rhu Resort, or the Four Seasons Langkawi. Both hotels are rated 5-star and are right on the beach. You’ll enjoy sunset dinners on the beachfront and can wake up to an empty, peaceful beach every morning. A hotel stay at Tanjung Rhu is recommended for those that want a quiet beach getaway for a couple of nights. There isn’t a lot around the hotels, but that’s the beauty of it.

Our top tips for visiting Tanjung Rhu Beach

  • Arrive early to be one of the first on the beach. Tanjung Rhu Beach doesn’t get very busy anyway, but being one of the only people on the sand is something special.
  • Try to visit the beach during low tide. If the tide is low enough, you’ll be able to walk across the sand bar to a small island.
  • Bring some snacks and drinks with you. There are a few beach shacks where you can buy snacks, but options are limited.
  • Bring your own beach towels. There aren’t many sun loungers to hire on the beach.
  • Pack water shoes if you have them. Tanjung Rhu sometimes has jellyfish, so water shoes will reduce the chance of getting stung when walking along the shore.
  • Combine your visit to Tanjung Rhu Beach with a trip to Kilim Geoforest Park. We recommend booking a boat tour around the nature park in the morning. You can then relax on the beach the rest of the day.
  • Stay overnight at Tanjung Rhu to maximise your experience on Langkawi’s best beach. We stayed in Tanjung Rhu Beach Resort and highly recommend it.
  • Plan your transport to and from Tanjung Rhu before setting off. It’s a remote area of the island so you’ll need to book a taxi if you plan on returning late. You should be fine to book a Grab on the day if you’re returning to your hotel early-to-mid afternoon.
  • Kayaking at Tanjung Rhu is a must! Hire a kayak for a couple of hours and explore the nearby coves, islands and beaches.
