If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway in the heart of Batu Ferringhi on the island of Penang, look no further than the luxurious 5-star resort, Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Penang. We spent 4 days winding down at this tropical hotel and were blown away by the hotel grounds, the service we received, the quality of the food, and of course, its excellent location right on Batu Ferringhi Beach. It’s the perfect place to stay for couples and families.

We’ve put together a detailed and honest review and guide of the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort, Penang to help you decide if it’s the right hotel choice for you. We’ll detail the different types of rooms available and facilities on offer at the hotel, plus helpful tips and tricks you might want to consider prior to booking. We hope you find it useful 😊

Location

The Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa is located right on Batu Ferringhi Beach on the north coast of Penang Island. It’s well located for the many market stalls, restaurants and bars of Batu Ferringhi, but you can also reach Penang’s capital of Georgetown in half an hour. The area is peaceful and relaxing during the day, but it comes alive on an evening. As the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang hotel is on the far end of Batu Ferringhi Beach, it feels secluded and quiet compared to other hotels in the area.

Upon arrival

As soon as you arrive at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, you’ll be greeted by the charming doormen who kindly take your luggage whilst you check in. We were offered a welcome drink on arrival, along with a refreshing towel, which was very much needed after a long travel day. The helpful staff on reception provided us with information about the hotel, the amenities, operating hours of the bars and restaurants and information on how to get around the resort. We then made our own way to our room and our luggage arrived a few minutes’ later.

Note that there are two separate wings at the hotel: the Garden Wing and the Rasa Wing. The rooms in the Garden Wing are your standard rooms, whereas the rooms in the Rasa Wing are larger and more luxurious. Depending on the room you’ve booked, you’ll need to check in at different areas of the hotel.

The main entrance at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Penang is grand, welcoming and inviting. There are plenty of lounge areas where you can relax as you wait to check in or check out, ornate furnishings and traditional Asian luxe décor.

The grounds of the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang

We just had to give the grounds at the Rasa Sayang its own section! They’re well and truly a highlight of any stay here. The entire garden area of the hotel is neatly manicured palm trees, walking paths, flowers, bushes and tropical plants. They’re so vast and picturesque, we went for a walk around the hotel twice a day during our visit. From the pool walking path to the beachside trail with a giant chess board, the grounds of the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang give it plenty of character.

Rooms

As mentioned above, there are two areas of the hotel (the Garden Wing and the Rasa Wing), each offering a selection of rooms. The Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Batu Ferringhi offers a whopping 15 different room types. You can splash out at the Shangri-La and opt for one of their luxurious suite rooms for that special occasion or go for the standard room option. We stayed in their Rasa Junior Suite and the room was incredibly spacious, clean and we absolutely loved the living room area. We also checked out a standard room during our visit and it was just as nice; it just had less space. Many of the rooms in the hotel have been recently refurbished.

Below is a list of the 15 room types on offer at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Batu Ferringhi. You can head to their official website for more detailed room information.

Top tips for booking a room

  • If you have extra budget, we highly recommend opting for a room located in the Rasa Wing. They’re a lot more spacious. You’ll also gain access to other great amenities in the hotel, including complimentary afternoon tea, happy hour and exclusive access to the Rasa Wing swimming pool. We’ll talk more about this later in the article.
  • Book at least 3-4 months in advance if you’re visiting during peak times of the year.
  • If you’re looking for a room that’s readily accessible to the restaurants, bars, pool and beach, we recommend asking for a room on the ground floor. The ground floor rooms are ideal for those with mobility issues, and for families too.
  • Compare prices on the official Shangri-La website and third-party booking agencies to see who offers the best price for your selected dates. You’ll sometimes get a small discount by booking directly on Shangri-La.com. Booking.com has competitive prices too if you’re a member of the ‘Genius’ loyalty scheme.

Swimming pools

The main pool

The hotel boasts one very large, tropical swimming pool, which is located in the heart of the resort gardens. The shape and the water temperature of the pool are very inviting, and it’s a great place to bathe and cool off from the scorching Penang sun. We absolutely loved the location of the pool, as it’s accessible no matter where your room is. It also has direct access to the beachfront.

There are a few sunbeds scattered around the pool area, with most of them located at the top of the pool, in front of the beach. Pool towels can be collected at the main pool at a self-service counter. They can be exchanged daily.

Children’s pool

The children’s pool is a smaller swimming pool located right next to the main pool area. It’s a splash area that’s perfecting for the little ones who aren’t yet strong swimmers, who may just want a quick dip to cool off. It has various water jets and a fun theme.

Rasa Wing pool

The third swimming pool at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort is the Rasa Wing pool, which is exclusively for Rasa Wing guests. Located just around the corner from the spa, it’s an adult only area that can only be accessed by those staying in the Rasa Wing area of the hotel. It’s surrounded by palm trees and feels very tropical and secluded. The pool area is simply stunning, and the addition of massage jets and streams is very much welcomed after a long day of relaxation! There are plenty of sunbeds around the Rasa Wing pool. They’re padded, comfortable and come paired with a palm umbrella.

Top tip: if you’re a Rasa Wing guest, you’ll get to enjoy complimentary drinks at the pool bar all day long. Choose from sodas such as coke, coke zero and sprite, or order a coffee and a selection of teas.

Chi, the spa

Treat yourself, or a loved one during your stay at the resort with a high-end, world-class spa treatment. The spa at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort Penang will transport you to a completely different world. The outhouse villa design, gardens and ambience of the whole spa area makes it a great place to escape for a few hours. The spa offers 11 garden villas, 3 villas for couple spa treatments and 8 villas for solo massages. It’s a must-do when staying at the resort, and we highly recommend splashing out on a spa experience.

Their most popular treatment is the 1-hour full body, Swedish massage. They also offer a range of hand, foot, face and body treatments. You can check out all their treatment offerings on the official hotel website.

Fitness Centre

The resort boasts a state-of-the-art fitness centre with all the equipment you’ll ever need, so you can burn off those extra calories! The gym has plenty of cardiovascular equipment, from treadmills, bikes, cross trainers and rowing machines for you to use. There are also back machines, shoulder machines and leg machines, along with a selection of free weights for those who want to do some strength training. There are refreshing cold towels to use, along with a water dispenser inside the gym. The fitness centre is open 24 hours daily.

We personally used the fitness centre a few times during our stay, and we found it to be one of the best hotel gyms we’ve been to. The temperature was perfect, it wasn’t too busy, and it was well equipped.

The beach

The hotel is situated at the very end of Batu Ferringhi Beach, with direct access to the sandy shores. It provides a lush backdrop, no matter where you are in the hotel. Along with most beaches in this area of Malaysia, it’s not recommended to swim in the water due to the jellyfish, but it’s great for water sports. We recommend hiring a kayak or a jet ski for an hour or so and exploring the coastline. The beach right in front of the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort isn’t the best. However, you can walk 50m or so and there’s a much nicer area of the beach to enjoy.

Bars and restaurants

Spice Market Café

Let’s talk about food! You’ll be happy to know that the Spice Market Café wins the award for the best buffet breakfast we’ve ever had. Located on the ground floor of the resort, adjacent to the main pool, the Spice Market Café is where you’ll be spending your mornings, indulging in some of the best food breakfast you’ll ever come across. The Spice Market Café offers traditional Malay cuisine, freshly prepared noodle, and dim sum dishes, along with western favourites such as eggs, sausages and bacon.

There’s plenty of healthy salad choices and freshly cut fruits, along with yoghurts, a variety of different cereals and toppings. The best (and most tempting) part is the bakery section. Waffles, pancakes, donuts, and muffins are all to be found here.

In addition to breakfast, Spice Market Café is open on selected days during the week for elaborate banquets, including BBQ and seafood options. For a set cost, you can eat as much as you like. The quality of food at Spice Market Café is excellent!

Top tip: be sure to head outside to the two market stall counters. You can get a traditional Malay drink, Tee-Tarik, or try their Roti Canai breakfast special.

Pinang Restaurant and Bar

Fancy a meal with a view? The Pinang Restaurant and Bar offers a cosy alfresco dining experience, where you can watch the sun setting over Batu Ferringhi Beach as you enjoy a light meal. The restaurant offers various quick bite options, from spring rolls and satay to sandwiches and wraps, as well as western options. It also offers local dishes such as curry Kapitan and Beef Rendang. Pinang is also a great place to grab a drink during the day.

We suggest visiting Pinang Restaurant and Bar for a quick lunch whilst relaxing at the pool or beach.

Feringgi Grill

If you’re looking for a top-notch dinner experience, the Feringgi Grill offers luxurious and warm dining with an extensive menu. The restaurant is on the upper floor, and it overlooks the gardens of the hotel. The Ferringhi Grill provides attentive service, an elegant ambience and variety of international dishes. Choose from various meat or fish dishes, or their highly popular set menu.

During our visit, we thoroughly enjoyed watching the chef prepare tomato soup at our table. There was even a very unexpected flame show! We recommend visiting this restaurant at least once during your stay, especially if you’re visiting for a special occasion.

Top tip: if you’d like to dine here, you’ll need to book a time slot with reception in advance.

Parking

The Shangri-La Rasa Sayang resort and spa offers free parking for guests. The parking area is easily accessible from the main road in Batu Ferringhi, with spaces in both sections of the hotel.

Internet access

Wi-Fi is available throughout the entire hotel grounds. The Wi-Fi is fast and reliable, and we had no issues connecting during our stay.

Water

One aspect of the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Batu Ferringhi we loved is the hotel’s environmentally friendly approach to water bottles. They provided us with multiple bottles of distilled water on a daily basis, and the best thing – they don’t use plastic bottles!

Jewellery shop

Another way to break the bank balance during your time at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang hotel is to buy a piece of jewellery at the on-site jewellery store. We didn’t visit the store during our stay, but it seemed quite popular with other guests. It sells a variety of designer jewellery brands, including Cartier.

Sport facilities

The Shangri-La Rasa Sayang has two tennis courts and a mini golf course. Tennis is free of charge and the golf course has a small additional fee. Both activities are a great way to get some exercise when you want a break from the pool and beach.

Top tip: exercise on a morning whilst the weather is still cool. It can be tough to work out in the Batu Ferringhi heat later in the day.

Kids club and Adventure Zone

If you’re travelling with kids, you’ll be pleased to know that the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Batu Ferringhi shares a kids club with its sister resort, The Golden Sands. Located in the grounds of the hotel, the kids club is a large activity centre where you can leave your children for a few hours. We didn’t personally use the facility, but other guests put it in high regard.

In addition to the kid’s club, there’s a soft play and activity centre called Adventure Zone, which is well worth checking out.

Top tips for visiting the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort, Batu Ferringhi

  • We highly recommend upgrading to a Rasa Wing room. The added benefits are very much welcomed. It could save you money as you’ll buy less food and drinks during your stay. The adults-only pool was a highlight for us!
  • Book a Garden Room if you want easy access to the pool.
  • If you want to dine at the Ferringi Grill, you’ll need to book in advance. You can book with reception ahead of time. Note: this restaurant is only open in the evening.
  • Be sure to book a minimum of a 3-night stay. The Shangri-La is a great place to relax, unwind and explore. We suggest 4 – 7 days here.
  • If you’re celebrating a special occasion, email the hotel in advance and they might surprise you with something that makes your stay even more memorable.
  • Be sure to try a water sports activity on the beach. The water sports booth on the hotel beachfront has excellent reviews and prices are quite affordable. You could also check out the hotel’s mini golf course or tennis courts.
  • Some restaurants and bars at the resort have a specific dress code. Be sure to check ahead of time to ensure your appropriately dressed.
  • Rooms on the upper floors are the quietest. Ask for a room on an upper floor away from dining areas if you value peace and quiet.

Our overall thoughts on the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa

The Shangri-La Rasa Sayang resort is one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at. The service, the professionalism by all members of staff, the attention to detail, the cleanliness of rooms, the quality of food served at breakfast…the list goes on. This remarkable resort ticks all our boxes. We highly recommend staying here whilst visiting Penang. Its secluded beach location, scenic gardens and many facilities are perfect for a relaxing beach holiday. It’s a little more expensive than other Batu Ferringhi hotels, but the added cost is well worth it.

We’ve put together a list of our final thoughts on the resort below.

shows the main entrance of the hotel

Positives

  • All the staff we met at the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang hotel are hospitable, kind, helpful and professional.
  • The gardens are well looked after and maintained on a regular basis. Walking around the Shangri-La gardens is a highlight of any stay here.
  • Rooms are cleaned to a high standard and a nightly turn-down service is offered.
  • The breakfast buffet at the Spice Market Café is excellent, with so many options to choose from.
  • The hotel is well organised and never feels chaotic, even during peak times of the year.
  • The Rasa Wing Room upgrade option and the many amenities it comes with is a nice touch. It’s perfect for those that are spending lots of time in the resort.

Improvements

  • The pool bar could do with being a bit more modernised. It would be great to see this fit more in line with the standard of the rest of the hotel.
  • You may struggle to find a lounger around the main pool, as most of the sun beds are situated in the garden and the main beach. Arrive early if you want to secure a lounger at the pool.

We struggled to pinpoint areas of improvement for the hotel, as it was near perfect for us. It’s an old hotel, but the management continue to improve the resort and are renovating areas where need be.

Overall score: 5/5
