10 of the Best Things to Do in Lindos, Rhodes

Welcome to Lindos, one of the most beautiful towns, not only in Rhodes, but the whole of Greece. Famous for its rows of white-washed houses on the hillside, its beautiful beach cove and imposing backdrop of its hilltop acropolis, it’s a must-see during any visit to Rhodes. Lindos is great for sightseeing and experiencing a traditional Greek town. It also has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

After staying in Lindos and spending 10 days exploring the town and wider island, we’ve created a guide on the top things to do in Lindos. From the cobblestone alleyways of its old town, to its sandy beach and the turquoise waters of St Paul’s Bay, we’ll provide plenty of inspiration so you can plan your own visit.

Wander around the narrow streets

One of our favourite things to do in Lindos is to simply wander around its quaint, narrow streets and get lost. Its labyrinth of white-washed buildings has small alleyways and staircases that lead away from the main centre to the beach and residential areas. Many are decorated with hanging flowers, and colourful doors and shutters, creating some excellent photo opportunities.

When you imagine a Greek island, Lindos’ maze of alleyways are exactly what you envisage. Take time to appreciate the village’s architecture and unique photo spots as you walk between the main sites.

Browse the shops

Nestled amongst the alleyways we’ve just mentioned, there’s a good selection of shops. Lindos has everything from gift shops and fashion boutiques, to independent stores selling authentic Greek products. Buy some olive oil, soaps and sweet treats to take home, or find yourself an outfit for the evening.

The shops in Lindos are a little touristy and prices can be more expensive than elsewhere. However, there are still some good independent options. Browsing the many stores of the old town is a fun thing to do, even if you only buy a fridge magnet.

Lindos Acropolis

Lindos’ most striking attraction is its towering acropolis monument. It has been built on the cliff top in the centre of town, creating the dramatic scenery the village is famous for. Dating back to 300 BC, the Acropolis has a series of decaying monuments, giant pillars, and most notably, the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia.

To get to there, you’ll need to walk up the hillside and several staircases. Entrance to the attraction is 10 euros per person, which is a little expensive considering it used to be a lot cheaper. However, it’s one of the top things to do in Lindos and is worth the visit. We spent time wandering around the ruins of the acropolis with an audio guide and enjoyed the views of the town and beach below.

Lindos Beach

After a morning of sightseeing in town, Lindos Beach is where you’ll want to go to wind down and relax. Its duo of coves has golden sands, vibrant turquoise water and all the facilities you need for a beach day.

You can hire a beach lounger from one of the vendors, enjoy a drink or lunch with a view in one of the beachside restaurants or try some water sports. Jet-skis, parasailing, paddleboarding or boat trips are good options for those that don’t want to bathe in the sun. The beach is only a 5-minute walk from the centre of the village.

St Pauls Bay

Lindos Beach isn’t the only beach in the area. Just around the cove from town, there’s a picturesque inlet known as St Paul’s Bay. Instantly recognisable for its Orthodox Greek Chapel, it’s a popular place to get married due to its stunning coastal location. One side of the bay has a bougee beach club with plush loungers and direct access to the sea.

The other side of St Paul’s Bay has a small stretch of sand where you can lay down your towel. Whether you want to relax, go for a swim, enjoy lunch with a view or simply walk around and marvel at the beautiful scenery, St Paul’s is a must-see during your visit to Lindos.

Church of the Holy Virgin

The Church of the Panagia, or the Holy Virgin, is Lindos village’s main church. It’s located right in the centre of town and its iconic bell tower can be seen no matter where you are in the village, guiding you back to the centre if you get lost. The church was originally built in 1300 but has undergone renovations throughout history.

It has a small courtyard, an ornate chapel and several beautifully crafted structures, including the campanile tower, which is typical of churches in Rhodes. The church is worth a quick visit while wandering through town.

Main Square

Lindos’ main square is the gathering point for tours, taxis and getting to and from the village. It’s where you’ll probably arrive if you catch the local bus to town. While it’s a small area and the true beauty of Lindos lies within town, it’s a nice place to visit in Lindos to soak in the atmosphere or grab a drink with a view. The restaurants in this area have terraces with a view of the bay.

Lindos viewpoint

Lindos village looks great up-close, but glancing at it from afar gives you the best impression of its gorgeous bay and hillside location. Visit the Lindos Viewpoint (view on Google Maps here) to get an appreciation of how beautiful this area of the island is. The location we’ve pinpointed has a panoramic view of the acropolis on the hill and the rows of white houses. You can also see Lindos Beach in the distance.

The walk to the viewpoint takes 20-minutes from Lindos’ main square. Alternatively, you can drive up the hill to the viewpoint. There’s plenty of parking.

Restaurants

During your time in Lindos, you’re going to want to taste some authentic Greek food! You’ll be pleased to know that the town has a good selection of traditional Greek tavernas nestled amongst its alleyways. Restaurants range from more affordable, no frills eateries, to Mediterranean fine dining and everything in between.

We had lunch and dinner in Lindos a few times during our trip and loved the traditional setting of the restaurants. Prices can be a little more expensive than other Rhodes towns. However, the beautiful backdrop makes it a great place to enjoy a meal at any time of the day.

Visit Lindos at Night

As the sun sets above Lindos, the village transforms. The busy streets of tourist day-trippers start to quieten down and its streets, shops and restaurants are illuminated. As it gets darker, the acropolis on the hillside is also lit up. Lindos at night is a completely different experience to daytime; make sure you visit the town after 6pm.

Wander around the shops for a more relaxed shopping experience or soak in the atmosphere in one of the many bars. Lindos has a surprisingly good nightlife scene, especially in the summer months.

Rooftop bars and restaurants

Speaking of nightlife, you have to visit a rooftop bar during your time here. The rooftop bars and restaurants are one of the best things to do in Lindos to experience the gorgeous scenery its famous for. You get a good view of the rows of white-washed buildings and the backdrop of the acropolis as you enjoy a meal or drink.

We had a cocktail in a rooftop bar and it was a great way to end our day in Lindos. If you’re only visiting the village during daylight hours, an alternative option is to have lunch in a rooftop restaurant. There are plenty to choose from.

Top tip: Parking

Before we end our guide, we’d like to share a quick tip on parking. Many people visit Lindos by bus or taxi. However, if you’re arriving with a hire car, you may find the parking situation difficult. Most car parks in town have a set daily cost for around 7 euros per car.

Rather than park in the centre, we recommend parking in this car park (view on Google Maps) by St Paul’s Bay. It’s easy to reach and you can take advantage of the complimentary golf buggy transport to the centre.
